formatting problems

in the past when people have mentioned formatting problems with MSE, i always suspected they were actually just a bit useless with PCs :owell im eating my words now  im using a uni pc and nothing is working properly
pages are loading, but with errors on page. if i try to thank someone, or see who has thanked a post, it simply sends me back to the top of the page. although i am typing in paragraphs, when i publish my post, it all merges into one great chunk  i am having to type out the vb codes to use smilies or quotes - the function buttons just do not work. if i go to edit a post, it is full of all the coding in brackets (and any attempt to make it appear in a coherant manner is in vain anyway  ). if i try to search, instead of getting the drop down box, i am redirected to the advance search page.is this because of something the uni have disabled on their server, is it something i could do to rectify things on the pc i am using? ive checked my personal options, and as far as i can see they are exactly the same as what i use on every other pc i access the site from...but this one wont play ball, and what i see when i type certainly isnt what i see when i post
if nothing else, please can someone remind me of the coding for starting a new paragraph so i can at least make my posts a little easier to read

pavlov, I think I have a formatting problem too - hope it's alright to add mine here
My signature seem to have undone the font from Garamond to Verdana last week on its own. I find that some of the fonts don't work for me on the forum - am I doing something wrong

I am not 'clever techy', but when this happened to me in the past, 'Ctrl+F5' combination was my best friend. I kept pressing it untill the 'Error' message in the bottom bar disappears.0
