Hi there
My mum, 200 miles away, has just got a new computer and is finding things a bit baffling. She calls me up and I try to help talk her through things, but its difficult when you can't actually see whats going on! I am aware that it is possible for me to set things up so that I can get remote control of the computer and sort some things out. My question is (1) how easy is it to set up, and (2) can I do it with her machine running Windows 7 and mine being XP?

The free version of Logmein.com should do the trick if Remote Assistance doesn't work.0

Another vote for Logmein Free. I use it to support around 12 PCs of various friends and family. It copes with various flavours of Windows without a hitch.0

Another vote for the free version of Logmein. I'm in the same situation as the OP and it works really well... .0

This is what you need mate. It is free and VERY effective w ww.teamviewer.com0

+1 for Both logmein and Teamviewer, i'd say Teamviewer is more user friendly though.0

Teamviewer gets my vote.0

But Teamviewer requires Mum to be sat in front of the PC to instigate the session - Logmein lets me fix them when she's not watching and slowing me down by asking "what does that do?" ;-)0

If you want to just talk though it so your mom learns by doing , Use skype to skype she can send her screen rather than her webcam, That way you can say exactly where to move the mouse and click.
Very easy connect a skype to skype call, then in the options in the chat window has send screen imageSurvey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740 -
I use LogMeIn all the time and it is great. Easy to install and very easy to use. You can even get a (paid) App on the iPhone/iPad.
