  • Call up the AA with the cheapest breakdown cover quote you can and tell them you're thinking of cancelling to go with them. The AA price matched for me when I did that and I paid £35 instead of £45 for the year so it's worth calling them.

  • I cancelled AA which would have been about £80 and went with First Call (recommended by Martin). Have got home start, roadside assistance and recovery all for £42 a year. Haven't used them yet, but was very impressed with the price!

  • My breakdown cover is with Norwich Union. I've only had to call them out once but on that occasion I was very pleased with the service. It was actually an RAC patrol that came out to me and afterwards I was given a customer satistaction postcard to fill in and post back if I wanted to.

Thanks everyone. I have decided to stay with AA more for peace of mind as I do travel a lot on my own. In the past they have been brilliant and have nearly always got to me under half an hour. But next year I will consider looking at the others mentioned above. My AA has run out today - poor planning on my part!!

The advantage of 'pay and claim' services is that a local garage/recovery will come out to you, so it is normally 15-30 mins wait.

With the AA and RAC they will try and get one of their own vans to you, reverting to a local recovery service only after about 2 hours usually!

I have been with GEM for 2 years - used them twice with no problem whatsoever. Before that I used the AA which was frustrating.

I have used Autoaid since first mentioning it (yesterday ?). Still no problem. Quick, fast, pleasant & efficient.

  • Dont forget anyone thinking of taking out / changing breakdown services to use quidco, I think most are on there so you could get yourself some cash back as well!

    Green Flag via Quidco...
    [strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!
  • Green Flag via Quidco £50.40 for 2 vehicles and £20 back from Quidco. As other posters have said the smaller firms use local garages so usually quick off the mark.
