yip, good call. i never made a big deal about it when it happened on mine. i got it repaired by a mate who does bodywork.

its a bolt that holds the wing mirror on that corrodes, this corrosion starts to eat into the paint and it makes it look as if the door is rusting. in actual fact the door itself is fine its just the bolt that needs replaced and the paint re done.
personally don't think this is enough to put of buying another ford, the cars been great, ive had it from new and it just turned 72k miles this week and i treated it to an engine service today.

My wife's is a different fault to yours and I can assure the door is definitely bubbled and rusted very badly, a body shop have said it's due to opening and closing the door the slight vibration rubs and breaks through the paint skin then allows water to penetrate through thus creating the rust from the inside, Ford totally know the problem and would cure the fault by adding a gasket to stop the penetration a design fault by them and some people got Ford to do the repair under warranty if you had bought the car new and it was only a few years old but my wife's car was 3 years old when we bought it second hand and purchased privately, it was probably coming into it's sixth year when we discovered the problem and we thought it would be covered under the 6 year anti corrosion warranty but no Ford probably like most Write it that the rust must penetrate from inside to out where this problem has started from the skin breaking from the outside their design fault and as long as you don't open and shut any doors you should be ok, I tried taking our case to small legal claims but Ford know from the way their warranty is written that no one is going to get anywhere basically the anti corrosion warranty is not worth the paper it's written on to anybody.
  • I'd also watch out for the sill that runs under both doors as mine went on both sides of my focus!

Again..re corrosion..my '92 Golf does have a bit of surface rust here and there but the metal is so thick that it just surface blobs...and..ermm..thats it!
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Depends on how much you enjoy driving and notice the difference in handling. I test drove both the Golf and mk 1 Focus and ended up with an 03 TDCi Focus for a few years. The interior of the Golf was far better but performance and handling, while not bad, were worse and not as lively. The Golf is likely to hold value better but not enough on an older car to make too much of a difference.

I find the seats in the Golf much better for me compared to the Focus but the Focus' are still ok.

I own a 09 latest shape 2.0 TDi Golf and also had a 06 previous version and both have improved their handling. I prefer their all round package to the Focus if buying from new. However if buying secondhand though I think I would choose a Focus as they will depreciate more so you can get better value for money.
  • Thanks for all your advice everyone. :)

I'm pleased to say I just bought a 53 plate Focus and am really happy! Not collecting it til Friday but I'm very excited!!

As much as I didn't want to change my car once I'd test driven a Focus I was impressed. It comes with 12 months MOT, 6 months tax, a full service and 3 month warranty so hopefully all will be good.

    Thanks again :T:T:T
