No claims discounts.

I've just had my renewal from direct line, anyway its shot up $200 (silly phone doesn't have a pound sign) from last year, started shopping around. I checked my details on the renewal and they say 8yrs no claims, when it should be 12. I rang them and they said I'd been with them for 3yrs and my previous insurance company had passed them 5yrs ncd. I checked my old documents and they clearly show 7yrs ncd back in 2007. So I'm been fiddled out of my ncd. Touch wood, I never had to make a claim, so it annoys me that I've got 4yrs missing. Firstly, does this matter? When shopping for insurance, can I say 12yrs or only the 8 stated on my renewal. Should I try and get it corrected? And if so, any idea on the best way? As an aside, my insurance on the car in 2007 (when it was new) was 376 its now 655, same car same driver and dropped the buisness use. They offered me 60 off the renewal for loyalty. Thanks all.

Won't make any difference to the value of the no claims bonus as there is a maximum that insurers recognise - used to be 5 years = 65% but I think a couple now give a little more maybe up to 70%.
As for the increase you will just have to shop around and make sure you compare like with like rather than just looking for cheaper. By that ensure that the cover on the new policy is at least equal to or better than the existing otherwise the saving is not a real saving at all.0 -
So what should I put down as my no claims?? Some comparison sites and insurance sites have drop down lists that go upto 9 or 10 years for no claims.
I've never made a claim and have been driving for 12 years and insured for 12 years = 12 years no claims.
My renewal says 8 years, so should I put 8 or 12?
(basically the insurance firms have stolen my no claims),0 -
Apparently, you can request you "full" entitlement when requesting your no claims discount documentation for your new insurer - in theory.
My experience of this has been a nightmare so far though::mad::mad::mad:
I have pasted some of the details of the email I sent to Hastings Direct tonight. Has anyone else had a similar experience or any advice as I'm getting really frustrated and worried.....
18th October 2010
I contacted Hastings Direct for my No Claims Bonus documentation. I requested that my full entitlement of 11 years was accounted for. I had previously been made aware by your customer service team that although Hastings only count up to 7 (why?) years with regards to no claims, the fact that I joined Hastings 2 years previously with 9 years would not be ignored. I was assured that the full 11 years No Claims Discount document would arrive within 3-5 working days.
No Claims Bonus document arrived within your agreed timescales but only stated your maximum of 7 years and not my earned 11 years.
25th October 2010
I contacted Hastings Direct again for my 11 years no claims bonus document stating the error that had been made by your team members. I also requested a copy by email or fax as my new insurance company had sent a warning letter about a risk to my premium based on not providing my NCD documentation. I was told that this was not possible. Post was the only option. I was told the letter would arrive with my full 11 years No Claims Bonus award. I asked for the full conversation to be written in my file notes.
No letter arrived so I called Hastings back on 3rd November (7 working days later)
3rd November 2010
I contacted Hastings Direct again to inform you that my documentation had not yet arrived. The representative had no answer as looking at my file, the documentation had been sent out on 26th October 2010. He (Nigel Baldwin) told me that he would arrange for another copy of my letter to be sent out. I stated clearly that I wanted my entitled 11 years no claims recognising. Nigel confirmed that this would be the case. I asked again for a faxed or emailed copy. I was told this time that I could have a fax but I would need to pay £10 for administration fee. Both Nigel and I agreed it did not cost £10 to send a fax. I declined the fax as I did not want to pay Hastings Direct anymore money. I asked that it be written in my notes.
8th November 2010
I received details of my No Claims Discount from Hastings Direct dated 3rd November 2010. It stated only 7 years no claims entitlement yet again. My feeling tonight has been of utter disbelief and upset.
My current insurer has stated that you - Hastings Direct have an obligation to provide me with evidence of my correct 11 years no claims. They will not ring Hastings Direct - as your representatives are urging – as they need the actual document. They have been extremely helpful but have informed me that my premium will be increased on 12th November due to lack of evidence of my no claims.
I cannot understand why this issue has occurred at all. I am starting to think you have a personal vendetta against me. I am experiencing severe distress from the frustration and financial worry of the pending increase to my new insurance premium due to your team’s inability to provide me with what I need. I will contact Hastings Direct again tomorrow (9th November 2010) to request for the 4th time what I am entitled to. I will also be passing this email onto my solicitor and asking her advice.
Chasing this issue has cost me significantly on my phone bill as I have made several calls. I will be totalling this up and requesting compensation to cover the costs.0 -
I can totally understand your frustration - Direct line say that my previous insurer only passed them 5 years - however when I took out the insurance with directline I sent them my renewal notice from Hastings - which clearly stated 7years no claims. It's clear to me that Direct line, how shall I put it politely - not telling the whole truth.0
