OMG Stainless Steel pan burned...

I have let my pasta burn in the SS pan it was cooking in. Yes I was chatting on MSE when I smelled something funny and remembered....

So I did put water in it and when everything was soft and loose I scraped it off, but there is still a layer of tough burned stuff that I can't shift. Should I use steelwool? Sounds like a horrible thing to use on a pan, so any suggestions?:o

I'd soak it over night with boiling water, washing-up-liquid and a bit of bleach or kitchen cleanser. Hopefully the soaking will help loosen it. Then once it is dry scour it out with salt and oil using a bit of kitchen roll. I've had a lot of success with the salt and oil method but I guess if that doean't work and no-one comes up with any other bright ideas you could use the steel wool as a last resort if you think the pan is otherwise going to be !!!!!!ed anyway.

    Hello Quasar

A sure way to get all that black molten lava ex-pasta off the pan is to fill the pan up with water, drop a dishwasher tablet or a dessert spoonful of dishwater powder in and then boil on the hob for about 20 to 30 minutes. If you don't have any dishwasher detergents in then a good subsitute is some biological washing powder. I have used this method more than once with good results, my kitchen duties also suffer neglect when I am on MSE, it is a common hazard I hear.

:rotfl: :rotfl: Oh how often I put the kettle on, come back to post or chat on MSE and half an hour later I remember I had a cuppa on the go! So, boil the water again... This moneysaving thingy bears the seeds of its ow failure after all

  • Two last resorts put it in a bin liner with some ammonia and tie it up outside leave for a couple of days then wash, or really really last ditch (as it will change colour a bit) put some cold water in to cover the mess and add half a cup or so of caustic soda and leave overnight (This will get hot and possibly fizz and be all exciting) Wear protection (No not that sort!)

I just lob a spoonful of washing powder and some water in, boil it up and then leave it to sit until i get round to remembering it again. Works every time.

I find biological washpowder works a treat as a fat digester and gets rid of everything if you are prepared to soak overnight.

A spoonful of soda crystals, half fill with water and bring to the boil - you'll see all the gunk lift off the bottom, good as new!

I find Vanish - if you have some - works wonders on burnt pans. If you haven't any then go with the washing powder.
