TSB 5% -v- FD 8% > application hassle

I'm going with TSB as i have my Vantage with them & it's just easier.
I'm helping my gf & brother to boost their savings % too, neither of them are with either of the above.
So i applied for my gf to open a current account with TSB to feed the 5% account. The application for just a standard current account was declined & it said she had to go into her local branch.
My mum went in & asked if an appointment needs to be made. They said no, but that it can be done online. My mum told them she'd (didn't say i'd done it) tried, but it declined. They were surprised.
Tried last night for my brother & it declined on him too.
The gf can get into our local TSB next Saturday, however my brother has no chance.
He works 8am - 7/8pm Monday-Friday & 8am - 6/7pm Saturdays. He doesn't have the know-how to apply over the phone (IF that's possibly - yet the website said in branch) & has asked me to apply for him).
Is this sort of hassle common?
Are First Direct known for being like this or are they easier to deal with? As if he can't open this, then he's remaining with a 2.65% approx, ISA.

The system has clearly recognised that someone other than the named applicant is making the application. Naturally it regards this as an attempted fraud so refers the applicant to the branch.0

Hi,
Have you checked whether the people applying for the account are on the electoral register? That can sometimes cause a problem when opening accounts. Are there any issues on the credit file, such as not living at the current address for very long that might have had an impact?
From what I understand First Direct normally require quite a good credit record prior to opening accounts, however on the plus side opening an account with them is normally done over the phone (or internet) and if required you can send them proof of address by post. Not too sure what the situation is if they require proof of address from you.
In terms of Lloyds although I have had accounts with them I always applied in branch, so don't know how fussy they are when it comes to internet applications.
Just remember to be a bit careful, because each application will leave a credit search mark on their credit record. Maybe your brother could book an appointment and attend a Lloyds branch near work at lunchtime? Alternative he could apply for first direct where most of the paperwork can be done remotely and by post.

Gm - the only way that's possible is with big brother installed in my home relaying a video stream to tsb. I entered all info just as my gf & brother would. It was all correct.
Nessie - thanks for that. Perhaps the length of time wiu my gf as she moved in in 2005 but my brothers been at this address since birth in 1992.
Didn't know the scoring thing as I fired in quite a few attempts for the gf but only 1 for my brother.
I'll look into the FD account I think, even for myself. An extra 3% with an extra £50pm over TSB isn't bad. Don't know if it has any major disadvantages over the TSB account. The only inconvenience I'm aware o at the mo is I'd need to apply for a current account with them to get the 8% account.
How quick to FD usually set up your current account? Approx 10 days?0 -
And how does that work then? The system has clearly recognised that someone other than the named applicant is making the application. Naturally it regards this as an attempted fraud so refers the applicant to the branch.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...:cool:0 -
Finger Recognition Software - it measures the pressure and speed of the keystrokes. Being a man, you naturally press down harder than your girlfriend and women type faster cos they're more used to it (PLEASE - no flames - only joking!!!Gm - the only way that's possible is with big brother installed in my home relaying a video stream to tsb. ). Is your brother older or younger than you? That may give an indication as to where you stand in the finger comparison stakes. You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...:cool:0 -
Can't t comment on the savings account, but current account setup should be well within 10 days - they're very efficient and, as you'll read elsewhere. have excellent customer service.I'll look into the FD account I think, even for myself. During the (2nd world) war radio operators transmitting morse code could recognise each other by their speed, accuracy and style (hence London knew when an operator in France was captured and his signals were being sent by the Germans).
These days, following the enormous leaps in technological capability since then, your keyboard skills can be analysed and the attempted fraud detected.0 -

what a lot of nonsence.
Simply they have failed the electronic verification. That is the only reason it fails in an online application0 -
I looked into the FD thing - you need to pay in £1500 a month.
My wages dont cover this, so TSB it is for me.0
