I bought an item but before I had chance to pay for it, the seller contacted me saying the item was no longer available. I asked them if they could explain why but had no reply. What should I do now? Nothing? Report them to ebay? I don't think the seller has relisted the item.

It may or may not be, but not giving you further information isn't good; it might not have reached the price they wanted for it. If you really think it went too cheaply, then report them as a non-performing seller, keeping the emails you've been sent as evidence for eBay. When that's out of the way, leave appropriate feedback.
If you are concerned about a non-paying bidder report, pay, and either wait for them to send it, or wait for them to refund you, or report Item Not Received if no item or money turn up after a reasonable period of time.

Do a search to see if similar items are selling for more, if they are than I will bet 10p on the seller is unhappy about getting less than what he/she wanted.
Pay for the item, just to avoid the risk of getting a non-paying buyer strike.0 -
Did you get it for a bargain and perhaps they wanted more for it? i.e. did they start it at 99p or something? If yes, then I'd pay for it, and refuse any mutual offer!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
