Private plate history.

Everyone on here will know how much I hate these things, but a friend has asked me if there is a way of tracing the history/car/ownership details of a private plate that is on his Granddads old classic car?

I know you can send £2.50 to the DVLA and they will tell you the keeper details etc, so I'm guessing they have a similar system in place for the number plates?

Maybe one for FLutteryby25?

I know plate changes appear on HPI checks (and often cause confusion) - but I don't know if they would show previous cars the VRM has been on.

I don't know of any route via DVLA to find this - probably because it'd possibly give you so much information about so many different cars it'd have data protection implications
  • Its an old classic car thats 60 years old, so to be honest most of the previous owners will be dead anyway lol.

So the plate isn't the one that was issued to the car at new then?
  • If you make the £2.50 enquiry to DVLA then it should give up the information on the plate and state which previous cars it's been on, but it may not give all keeper details of the previous vehicle's it has been on.

If the plate is 60 years old then it's unlikely that DVLA will have all that info as the computer records only go back to early 80s. You may be better off trying an owners club if you know which car it was on originally.

I left DVLA almost 2 years ago so things may have changed so apologies if this is wrong!

    Fresh face here.

There are reference books which reveal the history of registrations. For example I can tell you that 1 ABC was issued in 1960 in the Leicester area.

If you PM me the registration, I can give you some basic information.

    No.

I want to track what car it was on when it was issued.

    No.

Well, finding out where it was issued would be a good start. Wouldn't it?

With that info you can then go along to the relevant county records office and start looking.
