Credit Card Daily Limit

Yesterday we went and did most of our Christmas shopping with our Tesco credit card. We then went to the cinema and for a meal, when paying for the meal our card was declined (quite embarassing) after having to go outside and call the CC company it tunrs out that we are only allowed to make 10 transactions daily before our card is suspended for fraud purposes.

The worst thing about it is that Tesco will not call you and tell you, or send a text or email. They rely on you counting your transactions and phoning when you have completed 10!

Does anyone know if this is a Tesco thing or a Mastercard thing? As we use the credit card for everything spending 5 transactions a day each is not a problem.

Never heard of anything like that.....
  • Standard amongst a lot of credit cards, as an anti fraud measure.
  • IMO A good thing to do is to have a second card ready for emergencies.

    I didn't know that.
  • Interesting to know. I don't think I've ever come close to using the same card ten times in one day, though.

I've had similar a while ago with Vanquis - think their limit was something like 5 transactions - I paid for a few items through Paypal which, instead of going through as a single transaction, all went through individually - except, two got refused.

Bit of an inconvenience, but glad I found out at home rather than when stood at the checkout with £80 of shopping - or worse, stood in the petrol station having put £70 of fuel in!
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

  • Same things happen to me with my NatWest debit card. I paid a few bills & something via PayPal, did shopping at Sainbury's, bought something at Next, next thing I know, my card is being refused at Boots. They had to phone the bank and I had to give my password etc.

Whilst I was a bit shocked, I was kind of pleased they did it. Now I make sure I have 2 cards with me.

    Yep, but:
Now I make sure I have 2 cards with me.

So in another way the risk has been increased again!

However, if it happens with Vanquis, you can simply ring them and they'll reset the count there and then, thus allowing you to hang up and then put your card transaction through again, with it working.

If it happens with the Halifax, there is NOTHING they will do until the following day. Useless.
