minster stone fireplace-lose or improve?

we have just got the keys to our new flat and are doing decor work. There is a 1930's minster stone fireplace in the front room. The flat is victorian with lots of cornice roses etc. I think it just looks unsightly as its a yukky brownstone colour...has anyone done anything to improve their minster fireplace- can you paint it? Is it worth selling to pay for a different look?

If it is natural stone, you will devalue your property no end by painting it. And you will have a horrible mess around the fire if ever you light it. For me, it would be one of those features which govern how to decorate everything else to make the best of it.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Unless the house is baronial Victorian, and it doesn't sound like it is, the fireplace isn't in keeping with the original victorian plasterwork/woodwork etc. Bin it and get an original victorian fire surround from an architectural bits and bobs yard, eg Lassco.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

thanks- I have seen lots of lovely victorian fireplaces- might see if its worth selling or getting a salvo yard to reclaim it. seems a shame to bin it as they are quite expensive to buy I think....
here is a pic of the type new
