I'm self employed, I went 4 times. I sent in my claims form and never got a penny. I wrote about it and never got an answer. I phoned and was told to phone back. Just gave up. Lost about £500 in work and maybe a lot more due to not turning up. People in prison are treated better. If you can try and get out of it.

I just got another call. I had one about 4 years ago and went. First week got sent home as wasn't needed. 2nd week only lasted a week.

I now suffer from, but haven't been to doctor about it, anxiety so this ain't going to be fun. And being nervous about it won't make me give a decent judgement.

However, I'm curious, if you were on holiday for over a month when the letter comes, what happens then? Surely they can't fine you £1k for not replying because you were out the country.

I did jury duty a few years ago and quite enjoyed it (I might be odd, but I love court dramas). I was an employee, so it didn't affect me financially, but if I was self employed I would find a way to get out of it. People shouldn't be penalised for doing jury duty.

A girl in my work told her GP that she wouldn't be able to cope with the stress of a trial and she was immediately given an letter asking for her to be excused.
