Window security reported 5 viruses

I have got kapersky internet security 2011 installed. Whilst browsing this evening, window security popped up and reported 5 viruses and gave me the options to remove and protect the computer. When I clicked to protect I got another pop up asking me to save or run a programme. I did not know what to do therefore cancel it. Is there any way I could check whether my computer is infected as my Kapersky has not reportefd anything unusual? This pop up did frighten me a lot. Thanks

install malwarebytes, update, full scan, fix anything found before closing.

Did you watch Click on BBC News yesterday? They talked about the exact same scam. It's available on iPlayer in case you want to watch it...

.....I instantly infected my machine with malware.

Afraid to say you've been had. As already advised, download and run malwarebytes antimalware and if you ever get such a screen again, click the X on the top right and then do a manual scan with Kaspersky/Malwarebytes.

Sorry Hammy do you mean closing your browser or the rogue security alert screen/popup?

If you try and close the actual rogue screen/popup it will download whatever you do, best thing is to use task manager if possible, it might take a few goes to close it down.

As soon as you see something like that, disconnect from the internet and then try and close the screen/popup with task manager.

    Run Malwarebytes asap.
