Can I apply matt varnish over satin?

Yesterday I applied the first coat of varnish to a new oak staircase and will be applying the 2nd coat on Monday. For some reason I managed to buy satin instead of matt and I'm not overly keen on the sheen. :o

Would buying a tin of matt and using that as the 2nd coat work?

Given that you will probably have to rub down/sand the original coat to knock off all the raised grain arising from the first coat, I'd think this would work fine.

You will have to be very careful and/or do a 3rd coat as any bits you miss this time round will show up as shiny patches.

  • Thanks Dave - I have plenty of sandpaper to get busy with.
