Replacement power lead for old coffee maker?

This one has me baffled and any help would be much appreciated. I have an old 1970s Russell Hobbs coffee percolator which makes great coffee, but the cable/plug which connects it to the electric has been damaged. Frustratingly I can't seem to find a replacement. The connector in the back of the coffee percolator is similar to the plug and socket on a modern kettle in size/shape, but has round pins (the earth is slightly bigger than the other two), and I can't even figure out what the technical name for this plug is. As far as I know it's not used any more, but is commonly found on coffee percolators like the old sona models from the 60s/70s. I don't want to throw out a perfectly good coffee maker just because I can't change the power cable.

  • Hi,

can't you just renew the cable, using existing plug/connector?

That's a good suggestion, but unfortunately the plug was old and brittle and cracked when I opened it up.
  • Hi,

if it's what I'm thinking of, it was bakelite, and they did get brittle over time, with the heat, I've been trying to find a picture of it.

They must have sold a lot of these, that coffee maker is exactly like the one I own now. You can see the same mystery plug in the picture quite well. Looking around ebay at old coffee percolators it seems nearly all of them have this plug, so I'm still hopeful someone know what it's called or where you can still buy them before I resort to buying a whole new coffee maker. It's an option though, but a new cable would be cheaper and should hopefully mean I won't have problems with it again for a long time.

The picture in the linked ebay auction a couple of posts up is the exact one I'm looking for. I'm wondering if you're thinking instead about the big round old type kettle plugs? They're called bulgen plugs (I have one on my kettle) and they're getting hard to find now as well.

There must be thousands of these old appliances out there still, so I wonder why the plugs are getting hard to replace.

Yes, that's definitely the bulgen plug, just like my old swan kettle. It's a lot bigger than the coffee percolator. Thankfully my kettle still works and we can have instant, but I'm missing proper coffee.

If you ever have one of these bulgen plugs/cables, say from a kettle that has finally broken, it's worth selling it on ebay as a lot of retro audio equipment uses them and people are finding them hard to source now. I've seen them go for surprising prices because of this.
  • Hi,

why not contact Russell Hobbs, and give them a sob story about how you've been together for nearly 40 years, and it would be like losing an old friend, and of course praise them for making such an excellent product.

They might send you one gratis, if they still have them.
  • Try contacting Russell Hobbs, they may be able to sell you a replacement lead.

Or they might even send you a free replacement perker.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
