XBOX 360 slim 500gb upgrade

Does anyone know if the new Xbox has an official 500gb hard drive on the horizon.
We bought a 4gb model, but now wish we had more space - and instead of buying a 250gb hdd, if a 500gb was due out then we'd wait and get the bigger one!

what are you planning to put on the HD?
you are right, the 4GB is a poor purchase
i saw folks were having trouble with Halo reach on the 4GB 360s0 -

as far as i know theres nothing on the horizon about a 500gb drive, you can buy a usb pen drive and use that but i thnk you can uonly use ones upto 16gb0 -
you know that with a bit of slightly shifty know how you can make a regualr 250gig Western Digital hdd work in your 360, or I believe its possible to dismantle on of the old official drives to use the hdd inside.
dont know how you would need such a huge drive tho, but I have all my media on a nas rather than on the 360. 60gb would probably do me, I find my 20 just that tadd to small, but its not often i have any issues.0 -
The biggest Xbox I know of is the soon to be released Gears of War 3 bundled one, that has a 320gb hard drive, so I expect some time soon the 320gb drive will be made available to everyone that wants one.
The 4gb Xbox isn't so limited tho, you can use 2 x 16gb flash drives (any brand) in it to up the capacity to 36gb.
You can also hook up any hard drive via USB and the Xbox will format itself 16gbs for game use IIRC.
If you want to go down the 'official' route you could just get an older Xbox 360 hard drive for peanuts & remove it from its case & use that (so 20gb - 250gb possible there) or pick up a slim 250gb drive.
You can as has been stated just use a Western Digital 2.5" drive (presumably up to 320gb now.....or very soon).
This is called a hack in the link below but it's not, it's just sourcing the same drive MS use and setting it up with a little firmware, there is no actual hacking of the Xbox at all.
See these links (well I'm new here so I can't post links but you ought to be able to sort out the asterisks) -

Hope this helps.
I have noticed a few sites talking about 500gb drives but I'm not sure if they are hacked Xboxes or not.
Microsoft regularly bans hacked units (using an old drive or a WD drive is not hacking btw & nobody ever got banned for using them, ever) so I'd steer clear of that if XBL means anything to you.
Personally I'd go for an internal 250gb Xbox drive for all the gaming stuff & hook up a nice big external drive by USB for all you pics, films or music (assuming you aren't going to be streaming from a PC/laptop).
That way you can go to 2tb without any problems.
If you format the Drive to HFS+ you also ditch the Fat32 4gb limit on file sizes, handy for any big HD films you, er, have shot or backed up.
Good luck.0 -
you can also buy a 250gb hard-drive, but as has been pointed out the largest on the horizon is a 320gb due for release with Gears of War 3 or with Kinnect & special Star Wars branding they expect around about christmas.
On going down the unofficial route just be wary, Microsoft can be very dangerous to play with when it comes to modification - they routinely for instance ban all consoles with chips from Xbox Live, i'm not sure how they see changing HD's but it's a pretty narky response if they suddenly decide to disallow it.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -

If you mess with the Xbox they will ban you.
But fitting the exact same drive they use and installing the firmware they use to make it 'xbox' is not hacking anything.
They have never banned anyone for using the DIY hard drive, people have been doing it with WD hard drives for years - see this link for proof (note the date Sept 2008)

Microsoft have stopped 3rd party producers making memory cards for Xbox and banned them but this is entirely different and why would they inhibit people from doing something that can only benefit Microsoft in the long run anyways?
They have never ever banned anyone for getting & using hard drive this way.
So long as you stick to the limits Microsoft impose on the Xbox; so for now that's WD 2.5" drives to a max of 250gb and soon 320gb.......if you go trying to fit 1tb drives you'll court trouble as you need to mod the Xbox to do that.0
