BT Broadband speed lowered suddenly...

Hi Peeps,
Sometime last week I realised that my broadband speed was a lot slower than usual when downloading so decided to investigate. I logged into the router nly to discover that the downstream, which is usually about 6.5, now says it is only 4,524 kbps. The Upstream was also lowered. At first I thought we had been capped, but then remembered that BT would put it down to about 1 Mb if we went over our fair usage, were on unlimited by the way, so ruled that out. I investigated a bit further and have read on some forums etc. that it could be due to the noise on the line suddenly getting higher. It is currently at this:
Noise margin (Down/Up)14.3 dB / 8.4 dBLine attenuation (Down/Up)30.4 dB / 13.6 dB
I discovered this could be due to the router being turned on and off a fair few times in succession. Our router was turned on and off last week due to the power being switched off to the house as we had a new kitchen installed. The recommendations were to just leave the router switched on for a few days and it should go back to normal. However, I have come home from work every day and checked and found that somehow the router has reset itself each day as it states it has only been connected for about 7 hours or something. It even reset itself last night while I was on the internet. The whole router didn't reset, just the broadband as the light on the hub went brown for a few mins.
Any ideas? I've even run the BT speedtest on their site which tells me my line is now only capable of 4 Mb which is a lie as we've had 6.5 since we signed up. I know BT aren't the best broadband provider but we can't switch as it's my dad's house and he recently renewed the contract a few months ago.
Anywho, thanks to anyone who can help.

Have you contacted BT to see if they were/are having problems on the line, if the broadband goes off as you say they could have disconnected for some reason?0

If your router has been turned off/on a few times within short intervals during the day it can affect your IP/bRas profile.
