Unable to open photos (to many bytes) help please.

Apologies if this has been posted before, I have searched in vain.
My new camera takes photos at 12MP (3000 x 4000)
I'm unable to open them on my netbook (Samsung NC10) using Microsoft Photo Editor.
I get the error message saying that the photo is too large (too many bytes)
I am a complete novice and don't know how to solve this problem other than change the setting on my camera down to less MP which doesn't seem to make sense.
Is there another programme I can download or any way to change the settings? I really don't know what I'm doing.
I've searched online and see others with the same problem but don't understand the solutions offered.:o
Any help would be greatly appreciated, be kind, thank you.
Edit: Sorry, not enough too not to (unable to edit thread title)

Irfanview doesn't edit it. Even if it did, the thing is a netbook with 1GB of RAM and the whole process would be truly horrific. Netbooks are not desktop and laptop replacements - they are low powered devices for browsing the interwibble and getting your email. Many struggle to even play HD Youtube videos so manipulating 12MP images is realistically a step too far.
If you are hell bent on doing this, I'd swap out the 1GB of memory for at least 2GB.0 -

Irfanview does edit and resize pictures easily. Even a RAW uncompressed 12mp file is only 18MB and a typical jpg less than 4MB. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Hi Hammy, Thanks, I do only use my netbook for browsing, emails etc. So not really bothered about increasing the size of the RAM. As you may have gathered I'm not the most proficient user but figured I could just remove it if it muffed things up entirely.
I don't really want to 'edit' the images as such just open them and view them really although I may be temped to have a go now.0 -
Thanks Expresso I've downloaded this and can now see all my photos, I just need to work out how to set as my default photo viewer and I'm sorted.
Options, Set File Associations, Extensions Tab should do it. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I have no idea what this means ha ha!
Basically saying that there is no reason why you should not be able to display these 12mp pictures on your netbook.
If you press F1 function key while in Irfanview you can learn how to do many different things with the program. I use it every day as my default viewer and basic editor! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Ok, thanks. All sorted now.
