How much would you spend on firework related events?

I just thought I'd ask how much people would be willing to spend on firework events. Our local event in Guildford has had to be cancelled as last year the average donation to the event (raising money for charity) was 35p. I think this is ridiculous and now we might not even have one this year unless a sponser steps in to help out - but with an average donation of 35p from 15,000 visitors I can see why they wouldn't.

I think I would be prepared to pay up to about £5 maximum - obviously if I had a family I would be prepared to spend maybe a £10 for a family of four.

What do you all think?

p.s I would set a poll/survey thing but I'm not sure how to do it so if anyone can advise that would be great.

  • Personally speaking (and I admit to being very tight where fireworks are concerend) I wouldn't pay a penny to watch 10 minutes of money going up in smoke. At a local event down the road I just watch the display from the adjacent car park for free and get a much better view. I give to charity but not through firework events. Just my opinion.
  • The council sponser a display and we always go, but i am afraid I have to agree I wouldn't pay £5 a head to go to a display. Could this be an idea get a company to sponser the display and then charge maybe £1 - £1.50 a head to donate to charity, you could also get some glowy things off ebay and sell them, the mark up on these things at our local display is madness, some families must spend a fortune on it. Also maybe do a tea, coffee, burger, hotdog stand and you will also make money on this too.

Charge little and get the crowds in and you can make money in other ways ;):D

    Hope this helps

There's a pub down the road from here that has a fantastic bonfire and firework display every year. People come from miles around to see it. They charge an admission fee which goes to charity, but many tightwads like me just stand on the other side of the road and watch the fireworks for free :o We have friends round for bangers and mash for tea beforehand, then we go home and have pudding and drinks afterwards.

Ditto. I'd not pay either. May a quid but that's about it.

Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

I would not pay for 10 minutes of sparks. Go out into the garden and make a game out of spotting them.

Another tightwad here I'm afraid! Maybe a pound or two if I was really pushed but I'd rather not go than pay an entrance fee. Sorry!

  • The one we go to has collection buckets/tins, and people pay to park in the local fields, which adds to the total of approximately £10,000, from this the money is taken out for next years fireworks and the rest goes directly to local charities. We put a couple of quid in the bucket.

Personally, I hate fireworks - they scare me (have known 3 people all of whom have been badly burned at fireworks displays, in spite of following all instructions to the letter - each time, it was a "freak accident"...?!), therefore I would not pay to go and see them. I live close enough to several very large displays to be able to see them for free, and if I want to look at them I look at them either through my lounge window (in one direction), or I open the bathroom window and watch the ones in the other direction - although they are about quarter of a mile away, so there is no danger of one flying in through my window...

However, if I liked fireworks, I would be prepared to pay to see them at an organised display, purely to avoid the possibility of someone I loved taking responsibility for setting them off (as this thought would worry me all night and prevent any enjoyment for me...), and I would far prefer to pay to see somebody else set them off in a larger area than have any fireworks at home in the garden. I would still worry for the "professionals" setting them off, but I wouldn't know them personally so it wouldn't affect me so badly (selfish, I know...:o).

In reality, I try to avoid fireworks, although we have friends who live up by my parents who insist on having a big party and fireworks every year. I feel sick all night until after the fireworks have been set off (it is my best friend's hubby who sets them off, together with his brother and father, and they are like family to us, so it feels like it is my brother, if that makes sense?). I tend to watch them through their big patio doors which look out onto the garden (they are kept closed) and I usually have a couple of dogs, a cat and various young children who prefer to watch with me -everyone seems to think that I am being generous in keeping the kids/pets company...but I know better ;) - and am grateful to the pets and kids for giving me such a great excuse to watch from the safety of indoors!! :p
