Fake Paypal email?

Hi all, please could someone advise me. This morning when I checked my emails I have received one from paypal which starts "Hello Paypal customer" then "you have sent a payment of £18.00 to Skype(billing @skype.net)" then "if you haven't authorized this payment please cancel and get a full refund".
It then goes onto show invoice for 3 month subscription to skype, unit price, total amount etc. It also has invoice no. and paypal email id. and large "cancel transaction" box.

Neither I or my OH uses skype, I have checked my paypal account and the transaction does not show in there. So is this a fake Paypal email? and if so what do I do about it? also is my Paypal account safe?
Sorry for the long post, but I am obviously quite concerned about this. Many thanks

  • DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS. It is a pishing scam that will send you to a very real looking PapPal site for you to enter your details - at which point they will have all your login details...

p.s. I know this as I got one and checked it out but thankfully did not enter any details...
If you want to be sure log in to your PayPal account from the real website and check your transactions and you will find no record of the transaction.
  • I got the same one this morning but for Mobile Top up online for 3 O2 top up vouchers.

Defo Phishing scam. I sent a copy to spoof@paypal.com.

Do exactly as Rainmaker_UK says. If it's dodgy never use a link in an email and always sign from the real website

  • Thankyou both for your very helpful and quick replies.:)
  • Just for future reference, genuine Paypal (and eBay) emails will be addressed to you by name and never by "Paypal user", Paypal Account Holder" etc. etc.
