Data lost off Desktop PC Hard Drive

  • The PC seems to be running incredibly slow at the moment. Takes about 15 minutes to boot up and settle down.

I'm trying a defrag to see if this improves things. Seems strange as it wasn't that long ago I defragged it and not a great deal has changed on the disk

  • A defrag on this drive hasn't really improved the performance on the PC. I've run some diagnostics on the drive from the manufacturer (Hitachi) which doesn't show anything really to worry about I don't think (Error code 0x00 - Completed Successfully).

Obviously it is worrying that I've lost two diferent files after saving to this drive, 1 being quite large in size. Does it mean that the drive is on it's way out?

    No other problems showing?

Have you tried saving a couple of test files, ie. Word doc, picture files, audio and see what happens?

This has happened a couple of times. The first one being an Audio file of about 1.5gb disappearing!

The only other issue that's showing is that the PC is getting very slow on boot up and takes around 10 minutes from power up to settle down, longer than it used to do before. It seems to run slow on normal processing too.

  • Restoration is a useful (free) tool. It can be installed and run from a USB pen drive if you wish.

I would also second what poster John Gray said about running CHKDSK.

  • Since I opened this thread, I changed the HDD to a new one and reloaded the PC with XP and all the necessary software. Then the PC started going slow on me again. Arrrgh!

This brought me round to thinking that this was a motherboard problem or one of the SATA ports on it. I therefore went through taking all the devices off the board and readding them one by one. THis brought me o the conclusion that it was one of my VD Writers that had an iffy SATA connection on the unit.

I've left this drive unplugged for the time being and it seems to be running OK.

Strange though as I felt sure it was a Hard Drive problem. Never mind

It's alot better than it was. I've improved it slightly by replacing my 16mb cache Harddrive with a 32mb one. Accessing files is almost instant
