Highly unlikely you can upgrade the graphics to much. Most basic Dells have the graphics on board with no AGP slot at all, although I believe some may have a PCI slot but not sure in this case. Certainly the last Dimension 2400 I saw didn't have a PCI slot.0 -
Also be warned that this is the Dimension 2400 system, so the processor is not as fast as the one in the 3000 system.
I think it's probably worth waiting for them to produce another offer on the 3000s if you want a basic machine. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -
They have PCI slots which means you can insert a dedicated graphics card if necessary. just note, this is PCI and NOT PCI express.
The processor maybe a 2400 celeron which is a cut down processor, however, it maybe worth noting that unless you want to play high spec games or do a lot of photo/graphic manipulation the system will be fine.
I think it's very easy for companies to brainwash people into thinking that they must have the best processor, the best graphics, the best meomory and best size harddrive.
For many people this spec system will be under-utilised, most only want a system to do some wordprocessing and go on the internet.
Just spend a little time and think back to systems you used to use and then think of the spec of them. I used for years a Dell P75 (75mhz processor) with 32mb memory and 1mb graphics (on-board) and I used to play games on it, go on the internet and when I put a cd-r drive in (2 speed) burn discs.Welcome, rogerramjet.

And be warned I have heard alot of negative things about Dell computers, mainly about their awful after sales customer service. I personally would never buy from them.0

There really are lots of lower priced Dell systems available atm, all of them from the 2.4 celeron will be fine for net surfing and general office type app's

I would disagree. For under £200 this seems to be a great "Basic" machine for someone like my 65-year-old mother who wants to be able to shop at Sainsbury's and M&S on-line, send e-mails to friends and family around the world, and capture and print digital camera photos.
Ok, the 40Mb hard drive may need an upgrade (but not at Dell's prices!) .. can get a 200Gb drive for £60 elsewhere! but this beats hands-down the £400 minimum that she would have to spend if she walked into Dixons or PC World.
She won't be playing Doom3 or editing home movies... she just needs something basic (and a little bit better than the PII 300 that she has been using for the past four years) ... so why pay £100 more for the 3000 model .... or to put it into a better context, why pay 50% more??
I've bought one for her.0 -
Dell are the world's biggest computer manufacturer - of course you've heard bad things, show me a major company who haven't had some bad press!Sugar_Junkie wrote:And be warned I have heard alot of negative things about Dell computers, mainly about their awful after sales customer service. The problem is, that the silent majority of people who have had excellent service don't broadcast it, because they are happy. I have used Dell for years now, and have never had any problems. I also have a lot of friends who have used Dell with no problems.
