Skype- "I cant hear them"?

Thanks again for updates everyone.
My son tried the skype test and said it was fine.
We used my sons headset which looks a good bit of kit and it has a USB connector which slotted into the side of the computer above the USB for the mouse.
No my computer does not have a built in mic-or at least I do not think so!
The laptop is getting on abit now and is a DELL INSPIRON 6400
I might remove skype from the computer and re-load it again- do you think this might help?0 -
The Inspiron 6400 doesn't have a built in mic, just sockets for a mic and a headphone. It might be that your mic socket is disabled or faulty. Can you verify it works without even using Skype? Alternatively, as you have found out, a USB headset might be the answer.

Now that we have the correct information about your computer, and your sons headset, he says it works on the skype test, in which case there seems nothing wrong with your set up, as he must have been able to hear the incoming skype message, recorded and heard his voice back, so no apparent reason to remove/re-install skype.
The problem would appear to be at your friends. To save further problems get your own headset the same as your sons.0 -
if your friend can hear you, then your mic must be working. You cant hear your friend so it is either Her mic is not working or your ear phones are not working.
Have you tried plugging the headset into the mic socket so the sound still gets input but the computers own speaker is still sending sound out instead of to the headset .
Oh just thought, did your sons headset come with a driver? IT might be ,it is loaded on to his computer but not yours so he can use the whole facility but you are only getting the basics.0 -
USB headsets do not normally need drivers if the operating system is XP or higher.0

Have you disabled the soundcards software, I found that if I disabled mine then it wouldnt accept the mic plug when plugged in. I get a popup screen and have to select mic , because it can be used as a line out or 3rd pair of headphones. Mine is a Dell too.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

Thank you to everyone for your help- we finally did it-yippee!!!!
We had to upload our sons mic onto our system and then re-start the computer. Then he played about with some settings to make sure we had the mic on the right setting, etc and finally we did another sound test and bingo!!!! After a few hours messing we are now online and chatting-can't shut up now!!!
So just to say thank you from a novice who has managed to achieve something today- brilliant :T0
