photo editor?

I know this has probably been discussed before but opinions change and I would love some feedback. I take a lot of photos, mainly scenic, architectural and wildlife. I am currently using Picasa2 but am wondering if I should change to Gimp or possibly invest in PhotoShop Elements 4. Are either of these substantially better than Picasa and if so, how? Or are there any other options I should consider?

Looking forward to your comments.

I've used Elements and Album since they came out, wouldn't use anything else. I have tried some others, including Picasa, but still stick with Elements.
It does a lot of what you can do in the full Photshop but without (too much of !) the complexity. It makes Picasa look very basic - which to be honest it is !
I don't know if you can still get it but there used to be a "bundle" of these two available in places like PC world.

Adobe Photoshop Album. It's the photo storage system to go with Elements, it stores, organises and can do limited "fixing" of your photos. Have a look on the Adobe website.

Hmmm, £700+ for a decent Apple vs £30ish for an Elements license...

They're about the same. My flat mate actually uses Elements on his MacBook. Much of a muchness, although Elements seems to have a little more complexity to it.

You could have a look at Serif Photoplus. Offers much of the functionality of Photoshop (the full version) at a fraction of the price. Current version is 11 but you can usually pick up version 10 pretty cheap on ebay.

  • GIMP 2.0 is a good photo editor but is not as easy to use as its competitors. However it is free so why not download it and give it a try!!

Thanks all. I thought about giving GIMP a try CAT but will it interfere with Picasa in any way or is it OK to run them both?
