Removing old paint from brick?

Hi everyone,

What is the best way to remove old paint from the bricks under my windows outside? It was there when we moved in and looks quite tatty, its peeling and has already fallen off in patches. I have tried a wire brush and only bits came off, and with 17 ledges to do it could take me a lifetime!

I was considering some kind of heavy duty sander, but to be honest I am clueless so any advice greatly apreciated!

Sand blasting would do it, but it might damage the face of the bricks.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Thanks, can you sand blast specific areas like just the window ledge? My dad is talking about angle grinders and all sorts now!

You should be able to hire a small sand blaster and mask the area you want left alone.

What about a chemical paint stripper? brush on and then it may come off with a jet washer after the specified time. At least outside you can apply it thickly and wash the mess away.
  • Could you burn it off with a blow lamp and then use a wire brush? I did this once and it worked well.
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)
