Oh poor Alex.....
I was talking about fish to some friends from Poland and I was told that the most humane way to put fish down is to put it in a water contaner... in the fridge, seriously.
Apparently this way they just fall to sleep gently and never wake up....0 -
Sorry to hear that. RIP

actually no that is not humane. It takes a long time to die and that can't be pleasant.Oil of cloves is much better as is the more brutal but very quick way, throwing it's head against a hard surface.

I never said freezer, I said fridge - big difference
Never said straight into freezing water either.
Just something I was told by people who are into keeping fish.. Put the fish in the water from the aquarium in a smaller container into a fridge and let it just fall asleep that way...
Tru? False? Don't know...
Is it better to let the fish suffer when it is not getting better?
Again - I do not know...0 -

Of course it isn't but making them suffer further by a miserable drawn out badly executed death is just as bad0 -
To back up froglet's advice, and to recap on what I said earlier, oil of cloves or a swift bang to the head are humane methods of euthenising a sick fish.
Cooling it, putting it in freezing or boiling water or flushing it live down the toilet are very cruel ways to do it. It's good that one of these methods has come to light on here so people can be made aware that it is a cause of suffering to the animal.
It's false and it's better to let the animal die naturally than choose a method that causes fear and suffering.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Putting them into a fridge would have the same effect as my fish being in my pond over the winter, except in there they have hours and days to adjust as the temperature cools down slowly. They are healthy fish and though they become more dormant in the winter they certainly do not "go to sleep" "!! In a small container it would suffer a lot.Whoever came up with that idea obviously didn't look,or have have much thought as to what was happening inside their fridge.it's like flushing down the loo.Out of sight out of mind.0

just to clarify, I have only ever flushed a fish once it has actually died. but now i know better. I won't even do it then in the future.0
