New PC Build - Display Problems

I'm in the process of building a new Shuttle J2 Barebones PC and I'm having problems with the graphics card (Zotac Geforce GT240). The shuttle splash screen comes up giving me the options to press del to go into BIOS etc. It then goes to a black screen full of white blocks. Hopefully there should be a picture underneath.

Previously i'd started to load windows 7, but the picture was noisy so i decided to start again. It then came up with this.

Is it something really stupid that i'm not doing or do you think the graphics card is shot or something else. This is the first time i've built a PC from scratch, altough, changed drives, memory ect.

Any advice would be appreciated. Other spec is:

Intel I5 750 CPU
8GB 1333 DDR3 Ram (4x2GB Simms)
1TB Harddrive

  • sounds like a memory isuue (probably with the card rather than your RAM)

can you try another card even if it just to prove where the problem lies?
  • Thanks for the response.

I'm reluctant to open my current PC. I might have to go and buy another card if another solution doesn't come in.

I'd try booting it from one of the Linux LiveCDs which have Memtest86+ as one of the boot options (any recent Ubuntu distro, for example). That way you can test whether you have main RAM issues, and then see if it will boot into Linux. If it does you've pretty much ruled out a major hardware fault.

Having said that, the first Shuttle that I built would not run properly until I flashed the BIOS to the latest version, as the specific model of CPU was not properly supported.

That's a greedy card for a shuttle. Which one is it ? is it the DDR5 which has the lowest draw, but even that is a lot for a shuttle PSU, or is it a different memory speed .. .. and is it pre-overclocked ?

"I'm reluctant to open my current PC" - ????? Obvious solution is to try known working card. Is the g/card new or used ?
  • It is a new card. On the power front, the shuttle has a 300w power suppy which on the graphics card box is minimum spec. Looking last night on the PC world website it said the card needed a 350w power supply. Would insufficient power cause this?

I guess I need to find a low power graphics card with HDMI output. Any suggestions?

    Yes !

    - before you spend, beg / steal / borrow a~n~other compatible card to test the MOBO, if the MOBO's alright

    - put your GT240 in a~n~other puter to test the Video Card is ok, then you will ;

    - need a bigger PSU [ expensive for shuttle(s) ] or a different Videdo Card !
