maybe your friend bought a duff one, try taking the battery out or holding the on/off switch down for 6 secs,

Sounds like maybe the psu is faulty, or the battery charging circuit or battery is duff if it doesn't charge.

Is there an led on the power supply?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Put the mains back in, then press the ON switch on the side. That'll wake it up again ;)

Sorry, just seen you've said the on button doesn't work

Two options. Ctrl-Alt-Del to see if it will restart.
Remove the battery, then restart as normal.

Had this happen to me .
Its trying to boot up using a floppy disc!! Even tho there is not one in the drive, try flipping the eject buttons for the floppy drive. cannot hurt to give it a try. Switch it off and try again.
