Spanish General Strike- who pays extra costs??

Hi all, my daughter and her partner were caught up in the recent Spanish national day of industrial action, and could not get home for five days. As a result they incurred a lot of additional costs for accommodation, meals, taxis etc.

They contacted their insurer (Barclays) immediately they were made aware that there was a problem, and were told to "keep all your receipts and we'll see what we can do for you". This they did. However, when the claim was made, with full supporting information, Barclays stated that their only recompense was to be £20 per day for delay, and that no cover for extra accomodation expenses was provided. This obviously did not go anywhere near meeting the costs thay have incurred.

Ryanair was the carrier, and it does not accept responsibility for expenses as it has in its view met its obligations by flying them home (eventually).

It therefore appears that no-one is responsible for meeting the extra costs incurred, so through no fault of their own they are considerably out of pocket.

As I have never come across this situation before I'm unsure as to how to advise them to proceed.

This can't be a unique problem, has anyone any advice??

Cheers AG

you should have rights under EU legislation in the same way as passengers had with the ash cloud. see the forum at the top of the page

    or here

    http://ec.europa.eu/transport/passenger-rights/en/03-air.html

basically you are entitled to claim back expenses for hotels, food and airport transfers as well as the right to information from your airline.

I would put in a claim to Ryanair and tell them you are claiming under the EU Directive on air passenger rights (Regulation 261/2004). send scans of receipts and dont send originals until they have made you a written offer.

I expect Cityboy will be able to offer more advice and you might want to check out flyertalk.com as they will have lots of info.

Do you know, sometimes !!!! happens and we just need to get over it and move on. This compo chasing is getting out of hand.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

"Compo" is not a word that appears in the insurance document, which is supposed to protect one against the "!!!!" that happens from time to time, in return for the premium paid.
