VM to BT Number Porting

Does anyone know how accurate the online ordering system is for BT please?
Years ago when we moved they said it wasn't possible to transfer our Virgin Media number to BT, despite us being less than half a mile from our old house, as the addresses were on different exchanges in our city.
I am currently looking at moving away from Virgin but ideally would like to keep my number. I have filled in the online form on BT which asks whether you have an existing number to transfer, put in the number and full address, and it has proceeded to the order page having checked that there is a BT line and without any errors coming up on the number that I want to transfer. Does that mean it is possible or just that the system doesn't check that (though it checks everything else, so would be stupid not to!) and when I get my confirmation letter it will say that it is not possible to move the number?
I don't want to proceed and find out it isn't possible next week, as that would be a major hassle and I am in the cancellation period for Virgin Media (phone left live to allow it to be transferred).
Many thanks
