New Landline Number

Im just wondering how to go about getting a new landline number (to replace my existing one). Im with Virgin and since having my line installed I have had nothing but nuisance calls, after being fobbed off with different stories by different people from Virgin (firstly a crossed line, then apparently a voicemail issue, now Im told that number belonged to someone else previously) Basically these people have not bothered to even tell thier bank/relatives etc that they have a new number so I get bombarded with calls meant for them(Usually around 5-6 day) I just feel like unplugging the phone but then why should I be paying for something I can't then use. Can I get Virgin to agree to give me a new number free of charge?
Ive already been told that I may still have this problem regardless because Virgin re-use all their numbers...

Nearly all numbers have had previous 'owners' and Virgin appear to recyce them far more quickly than standard landline providers.
You can try to get another number but it may not help the situation.
Perhaps your only option is to get a Truecall device.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
