Finding a flat to rent with one person getting housing benefit

I am looking for a two bedroomed property to share with a friend. We both work but my friend is self employed and so recieves housing benefit. I work as a full time teacher.

We have been looking for a place for a while now and have not seen very many properties that will accept housing benefit. Does anyone have any suggestions of places to look? We have found a few private lets in local papers but they go really quickly. All the agencies in the area (Folkestone, Kent) will not accept housing benefit even though my friend is employed.

Any suggestions would be greatfully recieved as we are getting resperate and I cannot afford to pay the full rent by myself.

    Do you need to tell them HB is involved? If you're both working, wouldn't have thought they'd be concerned?

    If you both had references and a deposit and could afford to pay the rent until the housing benefit started to be paid, I would consider you as tennats.

    Do check the HB situation, I understood it depended on total household income, so if you are renting a place together you may count as one household in benefit eyes.
