Adding no claims protection after car insurance policy has started?

I have an existing policy with Aviva which began at the end of Sept. At the time I didn't choose the option for Protected No Claims, think I missed that option as I was too excited to finally have cheap car ins... anyway.
So i'm thinking now that as I have 5 years NCD (which Aviva has verified the docs for) I probably should have opted for protecting it, at a minimum (Aviva also offer Guaranteed Protected No claims).
Is it possible to add it later once you've already bought/started a policy? I logged into 'myPolicy' online and can't see an option for adding it. Has anyone had luck doing it over the phone?
Any info/advice appreciated, thank you.

Some insurers will allow this providing no outstanding claims. Call them and ask.
Some/most insurers will only add at inception/renewal.
