Plumbing Question - regarding Pips

How would you go about stopping/blocking a water pipe?

Basically had a washing machine replaced from the hot and cold water pipes to just the cold water one. So now need to block/stop the hot water pipe since it's redundant with the new washing machine.

What sort of stop do I need to block the water?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and a link to the kind of item would be even better. (Such as homebase or B&Q so I can see what it is and called)

Would I also need any other items such as some sort of foam or something to ensure the closure is water tight?

  • You can use either a compression fitting, solder fitting or push fit fitting. I am assuming that it is copper pipe of course.

All you need to do is cap the pipe off with a stop end, probably the best option is the compression http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=31319&ts=03697

You fit them in a similar way to this-

    compression fittings

Or you can just use a pushfit one- http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=24331&ts=03837

You can only do this on hot water or heating pipes, if you do it on the cold it is best to remove the pipe completely as the cold is used for drinking water.
  • Thanks weekendwarrior, wasn't expecting such a precise answer, so thanks again.

Yes the pipe is copper and it's just the hot water pipe for the washining machine thats no longer needed, not the drinking water pipes.

Though I might as well do the job myself rather than payout £35+ to someone else to come and do it.

    Thanks once again
  • I have to do the same job but i want to cap a tap, what will i need for that job please?

I am not sure if they make a cap and that fits on washing machine valves or not!

Probably the best option is to remove the tap/valve and raplace it with a stop end like going2die_rich.

Always best to cut the hot pipe back as far as you can to avoid Legionella
