Cleaning heating elements in oven

Anyone got any solutions to cleaning the heating elements and light on roof of oven when all the chemical cleaners seem to say don't use on Heating Elements or Pilot light? Oven clean in all other respects but smokes when I roast anything due to residue on the elements themselves.
