Can I reactivate Norton SytemWorks

if I don't have the orgininal product key

Bought a PC from Ebay a few months ago which already had a load of stuff installed and so we didn't get any installation disks. So not even sure if it is a legal copy.

Up till now the PC has not been used to connect to internet. Got broadband at the weekend and let Norton update itself.

I'm used to using AVG and Adaware on old PC. So today I thought I had better have a good look round this PC to see if I have adequate protection.

Today it is coming up with Norton Systemworks 'this product has been disabled because you have not activated it' . If I choose activate now it says - product was activated on 13/02/06 - click here to activate with different key'

Would it be better to just ditch it and go with AVG ?
I have Windows XP and AOL Broadband. Is AOL spyware zapper enough I should I install adaware ?

Advice please!

  • Yes I would ditch the Norton. It always seems to work well when first installed and then play up as you ugrade it. I had a laptop of mine serviced recently and they said that the Norton was the cause of half the problems (very slow). They installed the AVG, you can have AOL’s firewall which is excellent (McAffee I think) and I would install spybot as well (it is free).

Thanks. It seems that the Antivirus part is the only part still working - defintions up to date and doesn't say disabled. But I still might ditch it for AVG.

When I get the AOL signon screen it says Firewall detected. I'm presuming this is the one supplied with windows as I have not done a Mcafee download
  • Yes it will be Windows I should think which is probably adequate but if you can have McAffee I would download that.
