Slow internet speed

My internet download speed has reduced from 6.5 to 2.5mbps over the past 3 months. I am with Tiscali (now TalkTalk). I know they have been migrating Tiscali customers to TalkTalk. On checking my router stats I have found that my line attenuation has increased by approx 50% in the past 4 months i.e. download from 18db to 24db and upload from 8.5db to 13.4db. Noise margin has remained the same (15db) for download and has gone from 29db to 5.3db on upload. Bandwidth has gone from 7936kbps download to 3962kbps and upload from 448kbps to 732kbps.
I am not sure what all of this means. Has my telephone line suddenly deteriorated or what. Or is it simply TalkTalk migration problems ? Has anyone else had a similar problem and how did they resolve it ?

Apart from the fact talktalk are truly horrific, that wouldn't alter the line stats. Firstly check the router logs to see if there's been several disconnect and reconnects close together (i.e in the same hour) as that would kick in re-profiling and lower the rate until you got a stable connection. The upload speed is related to the migration though. If there's nothing in the router logs, next check is your phone line and plugging directly into BTs test socket.

first off, you (like me recently) have probably been migrated to the TT MSAN in the exchange, and are now on ADSL2+. This explains your apparent rise in downstream attenuation (as it's measured differently on ADSL2+ due to higher frequencies in use). Your biggest issue is more than likely your SNRM - with a line that short, you should probably be on a 6dB target SNRM profile. You should get this changed via the (ex-)tiscali forum if you can:-

Be an idea to post your full line stats please :)

A;lso, be aware that TT, even on the ADSL2+ Up To 24 Meg service, will only allow throughput over 8 Meg if you pay a couple of quid for the "speedboost", which is really a cap, so even if you get your SNRM sorted and your sync rate jumps up, you probably won't see more that 8 Meg without the cap lifted.

As an ex-tiscali customer myself and recently having gone through the changeover, I do know where you're coming from, and if I can help I will :)

p.s. don't keep rebooting your router too often, as it may trigger TT's DLM. (I've got it switched off on my line).....get the issue sorted first before playing too much ;)
