What size pudding basin??

Being inspired by a post on here last week about suet puddings and a like I want to make a steak pudding next week. I can do the pastry ok and the filling but what size pudding bowl do I need?? We are a family of 4 (2 x adults, 1 x 3year old and 1 x 2 year old.

Do you think I should do 1 big one or little individual ones. I have had a look on ebay and there is a 16cm one. Once made I play to pop it in the slow cooker with water to steam away all day - does this sound right??

Thanks in advance.

  • 16cm seems like a good size to me. I measured the basin I use its 17cm. Individual ones just sound like more work to me but I suppose they would cook more quickly.
I've never cooked a suet pudding in a slow cooker but my Annette Yates slow cooker book has a recipe cooked in a 2pint basin for which she says cook on high for 6 - 8 hours.

Bear in mind that if you serve individual puddings each person will get more suet pastry than if they had a portion of a bigger one ;)

I have a set of individual basins but have only done steak suet puddings once, and never will again. It was just as thriftlady says - all pastry and no room for enough meat. I tried to make the pastry as thin as I could and stuff as much meat as I could into them, but then had difficulty sealing the pastry lid on and they all erupted in the steamer. Not a success. Individual jam, syrup or chocolate sponge puddings on the other hand are the business :j :j One day I might even get around to sticky toffee ones.
