    Hung up my suit!
    ...so it's on.

I went on a visit to the middle east this week and, despite the 38 deg. outside, It convinced me that its the right move.

Start date is being discussed but likely to be 1 August. 18-24 months and then review.

    Genuinely excited.

Is it one of the oppressive regimes, or one of the nicer fluffier ones where they allow women to do things?

How did it convince you? I've yet to meet anyone who went out there to work for a period of (usually between 1 and 5) years, that enjoyed it.

The main complaint was that it was a fairly dull place to live (though that is clearly a personal thing) and that the heat, especially in the summer makes it generally an indoors place for a lot of the year. And whilst it's an expensive place, I'm guessing that won't be an issue for you.

Obviously people do like it and I've never lived there so I have no experience. It's not a criticism, I'm genuinely interested as to how you formed your decision? I had the opportunity to work there on a rolling contract last year, which I did consider quite seriously but turned it down in the end.

I have friends who did nearly 4 years in Oman and loved it - so did we as we went out to visit 3 times. They have lasted 1 year in Dubai and come home as it was not such a nice place to live (for them).

The wife of my youngest nephew is a travel rep at a high-end travel company, and as such she stays all over the world doing all sorts of things so that she can sell appropriate tours to her clients. She loves Oman, it's her favourite country in the world, and she's no shrinking violet.

It was so beautiful- we camped on a beach and got up at 4am to see turtle eggs hatching, we camped at the top of the 'Grand Canyon of Oman', we went diving/snorkelling/kayaking, we stayed in a bedouin camp, rode a camel and drove 4WDs up and down the dunes, all sorts. Yes it is Muslim so modest dress and limited places for alcohol but definitely worth a visit.

    Mally was that in winter?

Sounds great but camping in the heat would literally kill me.

We always went in Feb half term - far too hot even by Easter. Even then we did have a couple of days around 33 degrees. Camping up high or by the sea brought the temp down
