Early-retirement wannabe

And if they really will be on minimum wage forever [shudder!] then state pension will cover a lot of their needs so they just need to save enough to retire a few years early and help a bit with "replacement".
Is that in dollars? I paid fresh grads $80k in the US and over $100k for top ones. Salaries are higher but they have to go further due to high costs of insurance, rent, education, etc.
I take your point, but I had colleagues earning more than me who were continuously "penniless" due to flash cars, multiple skiing holidays per year, etc. They were also doing minimum into pension (least required to get full company contribution) even though this took them into 60%/45% brackets, because they needed this income for their lifestyle.
I ensured I never went higher than 40% (other than during my utterly crazy last year of work!) and salted away enough that I would retire at 54 when the !!!! hit the fan at the end of that year.
I don't hold myself up as an example of FIRE, not at all, but the principle of saving hard, not having an expensive lifestyle, and retiring while you're young enough to enjoy it, is really what this thread is about.
You could never be considered a FIRE, as you are mr Tesla lol. Talk about flash cars0 -
Although there are no doubt tax advantages of 'work' paying for your phone I suspect it is all the same money at the end of the day.
I suspect I would be chained to the rack with electrodes attached to my t*s within about 24 hours of the wifi being turned off in this house until I got it turned back on.....
There are plenty of disaddvantages of a work phone, in that the OH left a job and turned in his phone, incl pictures of our children, our anniversary trip to malta and other trips. Plus he didnt record the phine numbers so lost many.
Think he lost a hotel advantage program cause he used his work email lol.0 -

Since its my company I can and will be hanging on to the number and the phone. And for the same reasons, it's not calculated into how much I get paid;)Yes I'm bugslet, I lost my original log in details and old e-mail address.0 -
In a way - how much would you think it is acceptable to spend a month on a phone and tv/broadband? If you deduct it from those £55 I doubt very much it would have bought much time for retiring early- if you do it your whole life even..
People can do what they like with their money..... but don't moan about retiring on the basic statutory pension when you've made bad choices.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Btw do you ever phone anybody using the line for which you pay £3? Does it have inclusive minutes or?
In any case - how much sooner do you think they will be able to retire due to those £133/month they would get after 40 years of not using sky and using phone line for £3 ?The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.0 -

I am not so sure possible £133/month for 20 years is worth using £3 line for 40 years and no tv package. Do not forget , it would not even be £133 because one would have to deduct £5 superfrugal expense from those £55.The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Removing pictures & contacts is relatively simple these days even with the Apple iPhones.
I had a work phone for about 7/8 years (Starting 2005 to around 2012) and it was great to be honest. Never had to worry about the cost.
Mind you in the early 2000's it was MUCH cheaper to run a phone then it is these days. In those days days phones were phones NOT mini computers.
I remember getting some great cashback deals before I got my work phone. I don't know if anyone remember the days Boots sold phones via some third party brand.
They use to give you MORE back in boots points / Cashback, then it actually cost for the phone and contract overall and the cntracts were only ever around the 300ish mark for a 12 months period with the latest Nokia handsets - Good Times
The prices have creeped up substantially over the last 8-10 years.:jTo be Young AGAIN!!!!...what a wonderfull thought!!!!!:rolleyes:0
