hi all
over the last few months my pc has become slower at booting up , opening programs and general use.
i have sufficient security installed , avast, zonealarm , malwarebytes, threatfire, iobit 360, ccleaner
is there and good free programs that can be used to help speed up the pc and get it performing a bit better
many thanks

You could try Iobit Advanced System Care free www.iobit.com as an all in one package also try Iobit toolbox.
Autoruns is another good utility to show what is set to run on your PC.
Running threatfire and iobit 360 might cause performance issues as they both do realtime scanning as does your AV.
Also worth googling windows services as there are a few sites out there that list non-essential services that can be disabled etc. Try these with care and a system restore.0 -
Post back the make/model of your PC, the Operating System and how much RAM you have installed.
Also, did you update Malwarebytes and CCleaner before running them? If not, do so now and post the Malwarebytes log into this thread. Also, download, install and scan with Hijack This (v.2.0.4 /1.34MB) and again post the log file it produces into this thread.
It may simply be a case of you having too many programs starting up. When you've done the above people will add further suggestions/solutions.0 -

Hi, Have you tried a basic disc cleanup and defrag? On my pc these are located in Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools.
I have also found this free registry cleanup tool to be very useful.

The security software you've installed is probably part of the problem, try it without zonealarm, threatfire, iobit. registry cleaners and defrags are a waste of time, post your installed ram, and commit charge from task manager, and a hijackthis log!!

hi all
many thanks for input so far
the security programs i have running at start up are ZA , Avast and threatfire.
the others (ccleaner, malwarebytes, iobit are all up to date and run regularly on demand.
also do a complete av scan once a week, nothing nothing has come up in any scans recently.
When i get back on the said machine i will get the spec and run hijack this, many thanks

Piriform also have a very nifty Defragment tool available called Defraggler. It's much more effective than the standard built in Windows Defrag tool.
Well worth a try.

Worth checking that the iobit 360 service isn't running - I had it set up for 'on demand' use and found the service was still doing stuff in the background. I set the service to manual so that it was truely on demand. This might have been fixed as it has been a few months since I uninstlled 360 as it clased with comodo internet security.0

to be honest, i've always found security programs to be the main culprits in slowing down machines. so much so that i don't actually use a firewall or anti virus.
You might think that a bit strange, however - i don't do any internet banking at home, or buy anything online at home - i don't give any personal details out over the net at home - i do all that at work behind the corporate firewalls etc.
Also, i back everything up that is important to me.
I don't visit dodgy websites and i know about opening attachments etc.
So, worst case, i get a virus or malware - i've got nothing worth stealing, and it it really is a pain, i just re-install my system from a clean ghost image i took when the machine was "fresh"
I've been running like this for 2 years and still haven't had any virus / malware issues.
Not that i'm advising that you don't use them, but if your machine is a bit of a dog, then you could potentially think about turning some off - especially the virus ones that you could just run on a weekly schedule, rather than having them on all the time.0
