AV-Test .Results

Results now available 2010/Q3-Windows XP.
At first glance Norton seems to lead the way but still have to read full reports.

  • They do a good comparitive test every year in Web User magazine. In terms of efficacy etc AVG (Free) won this year with Avast (Free) in second place.

Not absolutely at the top in detection, though, which is where I'd want an AV product to work best!

The prejudice of many people in this forum against AVG (and, for that matter, against Norton/Symantec) doesn't seem to be borne out by the 2010 tests...

Theres a lot more to av programs than just how they perform at finding and killing nasties (But of course it is the most important by far)
Does it drain resources? Does it conflict with other software? Is it a pain to use? etc etc etc

Still happy with the free Panda Cloud. Think it uses the same scanning engine as the on in Panda Internet Security.

I often wonder if the people who write virus programs actually work for the anti-virus vendor.

Have you ever noticed when you try an AV it sometimes finds Trojans the other program missed, then you think this one must be better so you uninstall the old program, again I wonder if the Trojans were there in the first place?

The usability testing takes account of use of system resources, numbers of false positives etc

On usability alone Avast Internet Security and GData Internet Security were the top scorers with 6.0pts followed by a group of 4 scoring 5.5 consisting of Bit Defender, F-Secure, MSE and Norton.

AVG comes in the next group having scored 5.0.

Surprisingly(?), Avira only managed 3.5 in this category but was one of the best in the "repair" category.

Avast and AVG both scored 4.0 in the "repair" category.

Overall, three products stand out as offering good performance across all 3 categories ie Panda Internet Security, Kaspersky Internet Security and Norton Internet Security.

i do find these tests interesting however they do sometimes contridict each other, and although it does appear AVG has improved a lot in the passed 6 months i am still finding however that most people who appear to have problems with virus's still appear to use AVG.

i also have to admit i am interest in the Avast result as the av comparitives tests showed it to be one of the best at protection which does fly in the face of this test showing it as one of the worst

also on a slightly cynical note i notice that AV-Test is generally funded but the antivirus 'business partners' so wonder how much that influences the testing

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Are these all for the paid for versions?

Not keen on cobbled together suites.

AVG good at pickup of virus but cannot repair it according to Q3 report .
Consistent high scores across a range of tests not just one test is my rating of any AV tests .
In that respect AVG has failed more often than not .

AV comparatives last two years tests those with advanced + ratings in most tests the old old story Eset Nod 32 and Kaspersky .>>> Me no virus no trojans 12 years plus .and the only two programs that i consider for AV .
