I'd be askign around everyone I knew to see what people had - when my husband moved into his first flat he only had to buy a bed! He had everything else second hand from friends and relatives...

You don't need to spend anywhere near £1000 to get a top quality high spec divan set.

If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.

hi sorry to but in but where would be the best place to get a mattress from that lets you try them?
    many thanks

Always keep the old maxim "buy cheap, buy twice" in mind for every purchase, especially with mattresses on which you'll spend a third of your life.

John Lewis will price match (never knowingly undersold) and have just about the best guarantee/service going (e.g. 5 years on TVs and 3 years on white goods).
  • Hope this reply isn't too late - I was in a similar situation a couple of months ago and wanted to get decent stuff that would last me. I got my bed from Warren Evans who do really solid well made beds which all have a 10 year guarantee and aren't really any more expensive than a high street retailer would be. I'm thrilled with it - after years of cheap creaky metal beds in rented accommodation it's amazing!I also got a really high quality pocket spring mattress from Factory Beds Direct for £325 - well worth checking if he delivers in your area. You can't try before you buy but there is a 2 week trial period. Best of luck!
