When I saw the title of your thread, I thought you meant you Darling Daughter was due 1 day before payday.
Seriously, though, if you talk to the bank, they should allow the Direct Debit through - to inflict a £30+ charge on you because you are £10 short, and in full knowledge that your pay will be in the next day would be heartless indeed.

I'd definately cancel the DD...it's not worth risking upsetting the bank, risking charges or damaging your reputation with the bank by bouncing a DD or going overdrawn. Just tell Talk Talk you cancelled the wrong DD by mistake..it's no big deal for them, happens all the time.

My sister was charged £20 by TalkTalk last year when she cancelled a DD and bill wasn't paid, might be worth borrowing the £10 until pay day if you can.
One day I might be more organised...........

If it's only 1 day late shouldn't make much difference. Infact it will probably be a couple of days before Talk Talk realise that the DD wasn't met. Worst case scenario if they do charge £20 for a late payment its going to be less than the bank will charge, plus your credibility with the bank will be untarnished. Cancel the DD.

Do you have any savings accounts which may have an odd few pounds in them? I had a customer (at the bank) today in a similar situation - no overdraft available to her and she was £5 short for a DD. I managed to find 2 old savings accounts - not been used for ages, but each had a couple of pounds in them which we were able to transfer to cover her DD. She was still short but it was only 25p so she paid that in cash.

The world is Direct Debit mad! Why should any company with which you pay them to provide a service claim the right to take their money when they want! It should be down to the customer to decide!

I'd cancel the DD imediately and pay by card from now on. Be careful tho, if the company is really out to screw you they'll charge you for not paying by DD.
Debt as at 12th July 2006 - £61,345

    Well said. :T

Businesses I've dealt with when I have declined to pay by DD have only charged an extra pound or two per month, but still cheaper than bank charges if you're unfortunate not to have enough funds to pay a DD.

Besides, if banks intend introducing charges for every DD paid from a bank account, companies are going to have think of alternative ways for their customers to pay bills. I for one will cancel as many DD as I can and pay in person if I have to.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
