What to do - DD due 1 day before pay day?

Hi all

I was wondering if someone can give me a bit of advice

Our Direct Debit for phone bill is due to be taken 1 day before pay day and I'm £10 short. Now do I contact the provider (Talk Talk) and explain this and hope for some sympathy or do I cancel the DD and plead innocent when they call to say it was refused?

Thanks in advance

Do not cancel the DD! That would make the situation a lot worse! Talk to your provider to change the DD date or coudl you borrow a £10 off a friend and deposit in your bank account? Then pay them back when you are paid.

  • Thanks

I'll give them a ring and try - only thing is they produce the bill on 9th of the month and the payment is due out 14 days later - I'll give it a go, if I don't ring I won't get anywhere

Call your bank and ask for a temprary overdraft facility.

If Talk Talk can't or won't change the date of the DD what are you going to do? If you know there isn't going to be enough money to pay it, the bank will return it as unpaid, thus incurring bank charges of up to £35 for the sake of being £10 short. Obviously if you normally conduct your bank account without ever incurring charges the bank may be lenient and not take these charges off you. You would need to argue your case with them if this should happen. But if you know they are going to whack on this ridiculous charge I would cancel the DD and telephone Talk Talk the day you get paid (it's only 1 day late) and pay the bill over the phone using your debit card. Lie to them if you have to and say there was a problem with the bank and the DD and ask them to re-instate the DD to commence again next month and change the due date at the same time. Its worth a try.
  • Can you get a small overdraft facility?

DH gets paid a different date each month, so this was the best thing for us until I got my head around things.

Also you can also move the date DD's come out, I have changed mine a few times.

I'm with cancelling the DD and then setting up another on once you have been paid. Make some nonsense up if they ask, otherwise don't bother!

    Remember to change the date!

I have done exactly this in the past (also with a phone bill). I think I told the phone company that the bank had cancelled it by accident or something ridiculous & set up another one. They didn't care - quite happy to take my money off me.

I am ashamed to say that I am doing something similar this month - no other option unfortunately - different phone company though :o

arrange a over draft itsa cheaper than paying the bank charges especialy as you know you dont have enough you have the chance to avoid the charges take it.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
