Please help set up laptop/ desk top connection

Hi, I have the desktop computer connected to our printer but it is not a wireless printer and we have a laptop. It connects to internet via a wireless router that the desktop is connected to via an Ethernet cable. I wish to set them up so I could print direct from the laptop too and also so I can share documents. I need this as I am disabled and sometimes when I am ill in bed I cannot make it to the desktop so use the laptop to do all the things I would normally.

Basically I wish to set them up as a network with document sharing but do not know I have been on tech help where the person was able to control my desktop from wherever they were and that would be cool if I can do that on my two computers.

how and would be so grateful if you could give me step by step instructions.

Thank you in advance

  • Morning BlakesPops ,

have a look here for the basics, it's really quite simple. There is only one real problem ie your firewall should be enabled to allow the PCs on your home network to talk to each other. Which firewall do you use on each, and to help if there any problems you might find which version of Windows have you on each . Obviously the desktop pc will need to be switched on to use the Printer from the lappy. Mine works fine with XP and W7 (and previously worked XP & Vista)

I now have another problem. I messed up so restored pc to factory condition and now any programmes I try to install I first run the download and then when it comes to running the programme I get the egg timer for 5 seconds then nothing at all. I will open a new thread to try get help for this.
