That Weight Watchers No Count Lydia  ? I can't understand why pasta and rice are OK but bread is not:confused:

I say again , what is wrong with bread ? It's the staff of life, an ancient food made in some form nearly all over the world for thousands of years - like alcohol in fact :D If bread and wine were good enough for the Son of God, they're good enough for me  :D

I'm with the majority of posters - there's nothing wrong with most of GmK's food plans, but she's very extreme, and her science is questionable at best. Is there any real nutritional difference between aduki beans and other, cheaper pulses? Could you substitute pinto or mung beans? Miso soup can be expensive if you buy it in those little sachets in the supermarket, but if you go to an oriental supermarket/health food store you can get a big tub of paste, which makes 100's of cups and is what Japanese restaurants use (http://www.japancentre.com/?cmd=itm&cid=284&id=1272)
And of course, the OS mantra - Markets, Farm Shops, but not supermarkets!

What often gets me about You Are What You Eat is how people don't seem to realise that drinks have calories too! The people who are drinking 10+ lattes a day - it's still calories and fat! I don't think there's anything wrong with milk per se, but I can't bear the thought of so much milk in my coffee - Gillian should get them to switch to a nice cup of black decaf java ;)

  • Thriftlady - you ask "what's wrong with bread" and I suspect that where bread has been labelled one of the "no-go" foods, an assumption has been made that they're talking about shop-bought bread. I'm doing a low-fat/no-fat diet and I've been astounded at the amount of fat and sugar (not to mention salt!) in shop bought bread. Consequently, I now make my own and I've got it down to 1g of fat per 1lb loaf. I also only use a quarter teaspoon of honey and the teensiest pinch of salt. That kind of bread is about as healthy as its possible to get. However, shop-bought, mass produced bread isn't.
:hello: I'm very well, considering the state I'm in. :hello:

In one episode ,I remember a hubby was very proud of his breadmaker loaves and was devestated to be told he was helping to kill his wife by feeding her obesity .
I was quite angry at that statement. It could have been pointed out that the content of the loaf could be changed and the frequency of eating the bread lessened without that statement.
My bread is made by machine, with white flour, water and yeast and nothing else.No fat and no salt or sugar. It tastes fine and we manage 6 loaves a week between the 4 of us.
    Everything in moderation.

Ah, well there you go then -I don't buy bread (except pittas which are the most straightforward supermarket breads you can get). My hm bread is wholemeal, sometimes contains other grains and has no fat at all :j
  • I think that the Gillian McKeith diet is based on macrobiotics - I havent sat down and compared the 2 but would explain why no curries and why no coffee.

I have a Gillian McKeith diet book myself - but have yet to use it (despite my best intentions) lol, let alone actually stick to it every day.

Some interesting stuff on macrobiotics here (including lots of recipie ideas which tickle my taste buds a whole lot more than some of the stuff in the gillian mckeith book). A more basic explanation is here (along with more recipies). Wikipedia include some criticisms.

All the people I have ever met who followed (on the whole) a macrobiotic, all positively glowed with health - and they all seemed to have a liking for wine.
  • Jenittels, what ever works for you, I only talk from experience, there isn't a system out there that I have not tried at one time or another, but the reality to all of them is that they deprive me of the things that I love the most.

If you read through my comments you will see that I am not singing the praises of Gillian either, as her diet is playing havoc with my digestive system.

I know the real problem is that I lack energy to go out and take up exercise and that it is a twisted circle. Don't do any exercise(feel to heavy, worried I'd overdo it) do not have the energy to do any either. I am following the Mckeith diet because of the comments by most on the programmes that you have more energy to want to go and do these things, and for me at least I am finding this to be true.

Joined a gym yesterday so that I can go and get rid of some of this new found energy after my daughter has gone to bed, her diet won't on its own change my eating habits but if it gives me the energy and drive to do new activities then maybe I can continue to eat the things that I enjoy.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.

I remembered last night, that on the programme theres a disclaimer saying you should always consult a dr before embarking on anything like this.

Did you mikey? Id be interested to hear what any GPs would say/do.

I expect that mine would just say, yeah nice one

  • They say consult a doctor to check whether you are in good general health, and capable of such as diet change I assume. My doctor hasn't seen me since I registered with the practise 6 years ago, and they won't see me over this.
