Buttermilk substitute?

I live in a city without a car and cannot find buttermilk in any shop! My biggest supermarket I can access is a Mr S and even that's not that big. So was just wondering if there's anything I can use as a substitute instead? Its mainly for cakes etc.

Thank you! :D

Hi, you can make your own buttermilk, add 15ml of lemon juice(or vinegar) to 250ml of milk and leave it stand for 5 mins then use it instead of buttermilk. ;)

My mum has been baking for over 60 years and has used sour miilk instead of buttermilk in many recipes.
She makes a mean soda bread with it.

According to Hugh FW on Channel 4 this evening, you can also use plain yoghurt instead of butter milk in soda bread.
  • Ok thanks everyone! Will be trying out the lemon juice and milk trick.
I've heard about using natural yoghurt in soda bread so might give that a go, too as it's a lot easier to get hold of! :j

Mmmm soda scones I love them,my late Dad used to make a pile on a Saturday afternoon and they were gorgeous. He too used milk that was on the turn, not hard in the late 1940s as we had no fridge. We had a big cast iron girdle that he put on the top of the stove and I would watch the round of scones rising on that .The smell was to die for .They would burn your tongue as you could never wait for them to cool down properly, all floury and melt in the mouth, and even toasted on Monday morning instead of bread they were terrific.Nothing like the soda scones you see in the supermarkets

I substitute milk with a squirt of fresh lemon juice. It starts souring it pretty quickly and seems fine in baking recipes.

Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!
