I've got a couple of the Tesco Cast Iron casseroles bought when they were on special offer. I doubt that they are the same quality as Le Creuset but they work well enough for me. I love cooking with cast iron!
We also have an oval pot from probably the 70's which hubby bought at an auction sale for £2 with a couple of light fittings in a job lot!! He's very proud of his acquisition :jPiglet

astep - I did post this on another thread somewhere but I'll repeat it here in case it helps you and anybody else use your Pyrex caserole dishes ON THE HOB. Yes, I know you can't put them directly on the flame or electric ring, but last autumn I bought a very useful metal simmer plate from Lakeland (think it cost about £9). It's called an ARIS simmer mat which you put over your gas flame or metal electric ring and then you can put any heatproof type of caserole dish on it to cook stews and caseroles. I now use it all the time with my Le Creuset pot which is a big one which I use for batch cooking of caseroles although I could also use my smaller Pyrex caserole dishes on it if I only wanted to cook a very small stew. I've also find that cooking caseroles in this way rather than in the oven drastically reduces the amount of liquid evaporation so the liquid never needs topping up. If you Google "Aris Simmer Mat" you'll get more info and can watch a brief video of how it works.0

Sorry to bump an old thread, but how energy efficient are these cast iron casserole dish/slow cooker things? I understand you can use them on a low hob/low oven but they take hours to cook! Won't the bills go through the roof?Emergency savings: 4600

Using my cast iron Le Creuset casserole dish I can cook a beef casserole on the gas hob using my Aris Simmer Mat in about an hour an a half, providing I've cut the beef into fairly small pieces. I use the smallest gas "Simmer" burner on its lowest setting. I'm sure that must be a darned site cheaper than using a whole electric oven for the same period of time. I get the liquid up to a good rolling boil with plenty of bubbles and then turn it down to the minimum simmer setting for the remainder of the cooking time. I find that chunkier beef casseroles with bones such as Oxtail need two hours if you want the meat tender enough to start falling off the bones..0
