VM charging for calls i havent made

Got an issue with VM. I have been charged for calls i havent made. They are to a 0871 number. Have noticed after going through my bills as i had quite a big bill for calls from last month.

I have an VM coming out to check things over and i have reported to them a number of times that the green box opposite our place is open and i have had to call them out a few months ago as our internet was not working and the guy who was sent out noticed that the wires had been tampered with. I took him a while to come to that conclusion.

Anyone else had this problem?

No but as an ex NTL/VM Service Engineer I have been sent to faults like this.Sounds like either someone has Kroned their phone drop wires into your 'D' side in the street cabinet or a crossed jumper in the Mux,could also be a problem with the line card.
I once saw it in the student area of Belfast,Someone had connected their phone line into someone elses to make cheap phone calls, the affected customer phoned in as his line was always engaged.

Is it easy for people to do this and would it obvious for the engineer to see?

It can be done with a screwdriver blade. The cables are marked with the drop (home) address,so all they have to do is look for theirs & push the wires into an active line circuit.
These are Krone strips in the picture below, this is the inside of a Mux but the ones in your street cabinet are the same except the wires are Blue & white/Orange & white or Green & white depending on the telco pairs used. The strips are in banks of ten (10 to 20,21-30,ect) so say your connected into #1 on the pic,all they have to do is push their wires into the self cutting connections either side of the#1.
It should be obvious to the engineer.

  • Thanks for that! Hope he picks up on it. Will he be able to see who has been doing it?

When i have spoken to friends and family on the phone sometimes i hear a beep now and again and sometimes people seem distant and echoes.

If the person hasn't removed the address label, although tbh,it is harder to diagnose a fault if you cant see the set up.The are a number of things that could cause this but it is quite a common problem.

I've been looking at this problem for some time.

From 2005 to 2010 criminals were hacking into the Virgin Media Network (roadside boxes) around the London area.

During early 2010 crooks began targeting the Exeter area

I contacted Phonepayplus with this information and they eventually admitted the Networks had been hacked and BT were 'working' with the police 'investigation'.
Since then it appears this type of fraud using 09 premium rate numbers as largely disappeared.

It's possible they have started using 0871 numbers and moved along the coast to Bournemouth.

    What were the numbers?
